10 New Year’s Resolutions for Translators for 2014

2014 New Year's Resolutions Syllabus Translation MontrealAfter some much-needed R&R, we’re back at our desks and ready to take on 2014! To get us motivated, we’ve drawn up a brand new list of resolutions that translators, editors, and anyone else might want to adopt this year.

Translation Resolution #1: Avoid the word “fail” unless you actually fail a test. Even then, you might want to avoid it for humility’s sake!

Translation Resolution #2: Put your printed dictionaries out to pasture and subscribe to online ones that are up to date. The bonus of an online dictionary is that you always have the most recent version.

Translation Resolution #3: On the flip side, give up on Thesaurus.com and all its obnoxious ads. Dust off your old Roget’s. It’s way better anyhow.

Translation Resolution #4: Brush up on your native tongue by visiting sunny, distant lands.

Translation Resolution #5: Put down that grammar guide and read at least one book for fun.

Translation Resolution #6: Become a translation expert in fields that involve food, tourism, and fashion. Make sure you get first-hand experience.

Translation Resolution #7: Read your translations out loud. If something sounds terrible . . . it probably is.

Translation Resolution #8: Learn to shrug off the assumption that all translators master many languages. Speaking of polyglots, how about that kid, Timothy Doner?

Translation Resolution #9: Make a list of the Top 10 words that stump you and their possible translations. Stick it on the wall next to your desk.

Translation Resolution #10: Let go of your ego. If you need help with a tricky translation, ask for it.

Got any New Year’s resolutions? We’d love to hear them!
