The Word on the Street Is . . . All Dressed

Word on the StreetWhen it comes to pizza, terms like supreme, deluxe, the works, and loaded all evoke the same mouth-watering image—a pizza topped with everything but the kitchen sink. In Montreal, we call that all dressed, or toute garnie. If you’re wondering which is the translation and which is the original—it’s a chicken and egg situation, as far as I can tell.

Curiously, the word all in all-dressed pizza is a bit of a misnomer. In truth, the pizza includes tomato sauce, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and cheese. Where are the olives? What about the anchovies? The pineapple? And the ham?

Pizzas aren’t the only fast-food item getting all dressed up—hot dogs also come all dressed, that is, slathered with mustard, relish, onion, as well as sauerkraut, slaw, or just plain cabbage. Delish!

Know of any other foods that come all dressed? Let us know!
