The Word on the Street Is . . . Branché

Translation Word on the StreetIf a Montrealer calls you branché, don’t panic. It doesn’t mean that you look like a tree.

Branché, albeit an adjective, is about as a close a translation as you can get for hipster. This tree-like term is generally used to refer to a cool cat donning thick-framed glasses, an eagle feather fedora or a trucker cap, creepy tight jeans, and an ironic mustache.

But don’t take offence. It also means that you are, in a literal translation kind of way, plugged in, connected, with it, and otherwise “so hip you’re square.”
