The Word on the Street Is . . . Dude

Word on the StreetHave you ever thought about how many different ways you use the word dude? Depending on how you say it, dude can, well, mean almost anything.

It can be used to:

  • Express happiness, appreciation, or awe: “Check out my new car.” “Dude!”
  • Show sympathy, disappointment, or condolence: “My girlfriend dumped me.” “Dude.”
  • Get a stranger’s attention: “Dude, you dropped your keys.”
  • Start a conversation: “Dude, so I was . . . ”
  • Draw attention to something: “Dude, check it out.”
  • Refer to a person, usually male: “So this dude’s going down the street . . . ”
  • Fill in the pauses in a conversation: “So yeah, dude, I was, dude, you know . . . ”
  • Replace “OMG, did you see what I just saw?”: [Exchange knowing looks.] “Did you see the pants that guy was wearing? Duuuuude!”
  • Express anger, especially when someone cuts you off: “Watch out, dude!”
  • Greet a friend or several friends: “Hey dude(s)!”
  • Refer to yourself if your name’s Lebowski : “[Dude], or His Dudeness . . . Duder . . . or El Duderino, if, you know, you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
