The Word on the Street Is . . . in the Juice

In the juice is as fine a cultural cocktail as you can get. A literal translation of the French idiom dans le jus, in the juice has been adopted by Montreal Anglos to mean, as it does in French, up to my eyeballs in work; totally swamped; I’ve got my hands full; or for the less colourful—I’m really busy right now.

When I use this expression, I often picture my grandmother from rural Illinois listening in, wondering if Canadians are a bunch of nutcases. After all, we call our singles loonies!
