The Word on the Street Is . . . Soft Drink

Word on the StreetWhile the rest of North Americans arm wrestle over pop vs. soda, Montrealers sit back and sip their soft drinks. Indeed, soft drink is the regional word of choice when you’re not in the mood for a stiff drink.

In Montreal, saying “I’ll take a soda” will get you a club soda (with a slice of lime if you’re lucky), whereas saying “I’ll take a pop” will get you nothing but a quizzical look. Locally, pop refers to a catchy tune that gets stuck in your head or a pop-like sound, but not much else.

My personal favourite, however, is the UK term fizzy pop, which sounds about as cute as fuzzy socks.

What do you call carbonated drinks in your home town?
