Winter Blues Be Gone

If you’re in the translation business, chances are you’ve been staring at a screen all day. And now that it’s winter, you probably don’t set foot out of the office until the sun has set. As the days grow shorter, it’s normal to feel the winter blues setting in. Here are a few tips to help keep those dark thoughts at bay!

  • Go out for lunch—literally. There will always be more translations waiting for you, so make a point of stepping out of the office while there’s still daylight. That way you won’t feel so cheated when the sun goes down at 4:30.

  • Picture yourself on a sandy beach. Daydreaming is known to lift the spirits, and hey, you never know, you could be translating from the Cayman Islands one day!

  • Skip the sugar. It may be a great pick-me-up at 4 o’clock, but by 4:15, it’s a real downer. Reach for a mandarin orange or other fresh fruits instead—they’ll give you the boost you need to finish that final translation of the day.

  • Walk to work. Or if you commute, park a couple of blocks away and walk. That little dose of daylight will brighten your day, plus a brisk walk will get your heart rate up. (This is especially important for us translators because our work is so sedentary.)

How do you beat the office winter blues?
